Pentecost - Meditation and Prayer

Meditation

The Holy Spirit is God, and Third Person of the Holy Trinity, really God, the same as the Father and the Son are really God.  He is the love of the Father and the Son.

Christ promised that this Spirit of Truth would come and would remain within us  “I will ask the Father and He will give you another Paraclete—to be with you always: the Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot accept, since it neither sees Him nor recognizes Him: but you can recognize Him because He remains with you and will be within you” (John 14:16-17)

The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, never to depart.  Fifty days after Easter, on Pentecost Sunday, He changed the Apostles from weak fearful men to brave men of faith that Christ needed to spread His Gospel to the nations.

Pentecost the Holy Spirit Comes!
The Holy Spirit is present in a special way in the Church, the community of those who believe in Christ as Lord.  He helps the Church to continue the work of Christ in the world.   By His presence people are moved by His Grace to unite themselves with God and men in sincere love and to fulfill their duties to God and man.  He makes the Church pleasing to God because of the Divine life of grace which He gives.  By the power of the Gospel He makes the Church grow.  He renews it with His gifts, and leads it to perfect union with Jesus.

The Holy Spirit guides the Pope, bishops, and priests of the Church in their work of teaching Christ’s doctrine, guiding souls, and giving God’s grace to the people through the Sacraments.  He directs all thew work of Christ in the Church—the care of the sick, the teaching of children, the guidance of youth, the comforting of the sorrowful, the support of the needy.

We should honor the Holy Spirit by loving Him as our God and by letting Him guide us in life.  St. Paul reminds us to do so: “Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Cor 3:16)

Since the Holy Spirit is always with us if we are in the state of grace, we should often ask Him for the light and strength we need to live a holy life and to save our soul.

The Word of God

“I solemnly assure you, no one can enter into God’s Kingdom without being begotten of water and Spirit. Flesh begets flesh, Spirit begets spirit.”  Jn 3:5-6

“This much I have told you while I was still with you, the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My Name, will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you.”  Jn 14:25-26

“When the day of Pentecost came it found them gathered in one place.  Suddenly from up in the sky there came a noise like a strong, driving wind which was heard all through the house where they were seated. Tongues of fire appeared, which parted and came to rest on each of them.  All were filled with the Holy Spirit.  They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamation as the Spirit prompted them.”  Acts 2:1-4

“To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one the Spirit gives wisdom in discourse, to another the power to express knowledge.  Through the Spirit one receives faith; by the same Spirit another is given the gift of healing, and still another miraculous powers.  Prophecy is given to one; to another power to distinguish one spirit from another.  One receives the gift of tongues, another that of interpreting the tongues.  But is is one and the same Spirit Who produces all these gifts, distributing them to each as He wills.”  1 Cor 12:4-11

Come, Holy Spirit!!
Consecration

Holy Spirit, Divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to You my understanding, heart, and will, my whole being, for time and for eternity.  May my understanding be always submissive to Your heavenly inspirations and to the teaching of the Catholic Church, of which You are the infallible Guide.  May my heart be ever inflamed with the love of God and of my neighbor.  May my will be ever conformed to the Divine Will.  May my whole life be faithful to the imitation of the life and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to Whom with the Father and You be honor and glory forever.

God, Holy Spirit, Infinite Love of the Father and the Son, through the pure hands of Mary, Your Immaculate Spouse, I place myself this day, and all the days of the my life, upon Your chosen altar, consuming fire, being firmly resolved now more than ever to hear You voice and to do in all things Your most holy and adorable Will.

Pentecost Tongues of Fire -- Holy Spirit Come!

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator Blest!

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest!
And in our souls take up Your rest;
Come, with Your grace and heavenly aid,
To fill the hearts which You have made.
O Comforter, to You do we cry,
O heavenly Gift of God Most High,
O Fount of Life and Fire of Love,
And Sweet Anointing from above!

You in Your sevenfold Gifts are known;
You, Finger of God’s hand, we own;
You Promise of the Father, You,
Who do the tongue with power imbue.

Kindle our senses from above
And make our hearts o’erflow with love;
With patience firm and virtue high,
The weakness of our flesh supply.

Far from us drive the foe we dread,
And grant us Your true peace instead;
So shall we not, with You for Guide,
Turn from the path of life aside.

Oh, may Your grace on us bestow
The Father and the Son to know;
And You, through endless times confessed,
Of both the eternal Spirit blest.

Now to the Father and the Son,
Who rose from death , be glory given,
With You, O holy Comforter,
Henceforth by all in earth and heaven.  Amen.

V.   Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created;
R.  And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.  God, You have taught the hearts of Your faithful people
by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit.

Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things
and evermore to rejoice in His Holy comfort.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

St. Patrick a great man of faith

Saint Patrick, Great Evangelizer
St. Patrick
Lived 385 - 461

From the Confessions of Saint Patrick

Through me
many peoples
have been reborn
in God

I give  unceasing  thanks to God, who kept me faithful in the day of my testing.  Today I can offer Him sacrifice and confidence, giving myself as a living victim to Christ, my Lord, who kept me safe through all my trails.

St. Patrick proclaiming Christ to Ireland
I can say now: Who am I, Lord, and what is my calling, that you worked through me with such divine power?  You did all this so that today among the Gentiles I might constantly rejoice and glorify Your Name wherever I may be, both in prosperity and in adversity.

You did it so that, whatever happened to me, I might accept good and evil equally, always giving thanks to God.  God showed me how to have faith in Him forever, as one who is never to be doubted.  He answered my prayer in such a way that in the last days, ignorant though I am I might be bold enough to take up so holy and so wonderful a task, and imitate in some degree those who the Lord has so long ago foretold as heralds of His Gospel, bearing witness to all nations.

How did I get this wisdom, that was not mine before?  I did not know the number of my days, or have knowledge of God.

How did so great and salutary a gift come to me, the gift of knowing and loving God, though at the cost of homeland and family?

I came to the Irish peoples to preach the Gospel and endure the taunts of unbelievers, putting up with reproaches about my earthly pilgrimage, suffering many persecutions, even bondage, and losing my birthright of freedom for the benefit of others.

St. Patrick Apostle and Patron of Ireland

If I am worthy, I am ready  also to give up my life,
without hesitation and most willingly, for His name.

I want to spend myself in that country,
even in death,
if the Lord should grant me this favor.
I am deeply in His debt, for He gave me this favor.

I am deeply in His debt, for He gave me that great grace that through me many peoples should be reborn in God, and then made perfect by confirmation and everywhere among them clergy ordained for a people so recently coming to believe, one people gathered by the Lord from the ends of the earth.

As God had prophesied of old through the prophets.  The nations shall come to you from the ends of the earth, and say: “How false are the idols made by our fathers: they are useless.”  In another prophesy he said, I have set you as a light among the nations, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

It is among that people
that I want to wait for the promise
made by Him,
who assuredly never tells a lie.

He makes this promise in the Gospel: They shall come from the east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  This is our faith: believers are to come from the world.

The Origins & Prayer of Our Lady of Good Remedy

Our Lady of Good Remedy, pray for us!

I have been faithfully reciting the Novena prayer for special intentions for nearly a year now.  I was curious as to the origin of the title  Our Lady of Good Remedy…. And I found the answer!

The following was copied from the America Needs Fatima website which I highly recommend you go to and share with everyone! https://www.americaneedsfatima.org/Our-Blessed-Mother/our-lady-of-good-remedy-novena.html

Muslim slave trade

For many centuries, Muslim fleets seized Catholic ships and invaded Catholic lands and took away men, women and children into slavery. The Catholic population in many countries, especially in Italy, Spain and Portugal lived in constant fear of being carried off into slavery. France, Britain, Holland, Ireland, and even Iceland suffered similar attacks and some of their population were captured and sold in the Islamic slave market of North Africa and the Middle East.

Muslim slave trade
It was perilous in the extreme to their eternal salvation for Catholics to live as slaves in Muslim society because of their grossly immoral customs. Women were in special danger because they were habitually sold into Muslim harems.

But God did not leave His people unaided. He inspired several religious institutions to work towards the rescue of the Catholic slaves from their Muslim slave masters.

One of these was the Trinitarian Order, which was founded by Saint John Matha in 1198. This Order was founded to redeem Catholic slaves from the Islamic slave markets and to set them free.

St. John Matha
However, only by raising large sums of money could the Trinitarians carry out their mission of buying back Catholic slaves. To be successful in raising such huge sums of money, they confided their fundraising efforts to the merciful protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

And She did not let them down. In fact, the Mother of God was so generous in answering their pleas for funds, that they called Her "Our Lady of Good Remedy."

And so, the Trinitarians were able to free many slaves from the bondage of slavery and, above all, to free them from the moral evils of sin that was prevalent in those decadent Muslim societies.

Today, we need Our Lady’s help more than ever in our personal lives, to resolve complicated personal situations and to find solutions for troubles we face in our families.

Above all, we need Our Lady of Remedy's powerful intercession to help us turn back the rising tide of radical Islamic Terrorism that is destabilizing the world. Our country and the world desperately need Our Lady’s powerful and unfailing help.

Our Lady of Good Remedy Novena

O QUEEN OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, Most Holy Virgin, we venerate thee. Thou art the beloved Daughter of the Most High God, the chosen Mother of the Incarnate Word, the Immaculate Spouse of the Holy Spirit, and the Sacred Vessel of the Most Holy Trinity.

O Mother of the Divine Redeemer, who under the title of Our Lady of Good Remedy comes to the aid of all who call upon thee, extend thy maternal protection to us. We depend on thee, Dear Mother, as helpless and needy children depend on a tender and caring mother.
Hail, Mary....

O LADY OF GOOD REMEDY, source of unfailing help, grant that we may draw from thy treasury of graces in our time of need.

Touch the hearts of sinners, that they may seek reconciliation and forgiveness. Bring comfort to the afflicted and the lonely; help the poor and the hopeless; aid the sick and the suffering. May they be healed in body and strengthened in spirit to endure their sufferings with patient resignation and Christian fortitude.
Hail, Mary....

DEAR LADY OF GOOD REMEDY, source of unfailing help, thy compassionate heart knows a remedy for every affliction and misery we encounter in life. Help me with thy prayers and intercession to find a remedy for my problems and needs, especially for... (Mention your intentions here).

O loving Mother, on my part, I pledge to adopt a more intensely Christian lifestyle, to a more careful observance of the laws of God, to be more conscientious in fulfilling the obligations of my state in life, and to strive to be a source of healing in this broken world of ours.

Dear Lady of Good Remedy, be ever present to me, and through thy intercession, may I enjoy health of body and peace of mind, and grow stronger in the faith and in the love of thy Son, Jesus.
Hail, Mary.....

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of Good Remedy,

R. That we may deepen our dedication to thy Son, and make the world alive with His Spirit.

The Martyrdom of Peter and Paul

Christ with Sts. Peter and Paul

From a sermon by Saint Augustine, bishop 354-430 A.D.

The Martyrs realized what they taught

This day (Feast Day Peter and Paul, Apostles, June 29), has been made holy by the passion of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul.

We are, therefore, not talking about some obscure martyrs.

For their voice has gone forth to all the world,
and to the ends of the earth their message.

These martyrs realized what they taught: they pursued justice they confessed the truth, they died for it.

Saint Peter, the first of the apostles and a fervent lover of Christ, merited to hear these words: I say to you that you are Peter, for he had said: You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.  Then Christ said, I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.

On this rock I will build the faith that you now confess, and on your words: You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God,  I will build my Church.

For you are Peter,
and the name Peter comes
from petra, the word for “rock”,
and not vice versa.

I say to you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build my Church.

“Peter” comes, therefore,
from petra, just as
“Christian” comes from Christ.

To you I shall give the keys of the kingdom of heaven
As you are aware, Jesus chose His disciples before His passion and called them apostles; and among these almost everywhere Peter alone deserved to represent the entire Church.

And because of that role which he alone had, he merited to hear the words: To you I shall give the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

For it was not one man who received the keys, but the entire Church considered as one.  Now insofar as he represented the unity and universality of the Church, Peter’s pre-eminence is clear from the words: To you I give, for what was given was given to all.

Peter feed My sheep
For the face that it was the Church that received the keys of the kingdom of God is clear from what the Lord says elsewhere to all the apostles: Receive the Holy Spirit, adding immediately, whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, and whose sins you retain, they are retained.

Rightly then did the Lord after His resurrection entrust Peter with the feeding of his sheep.  Yet he was not the only disciple to merit the feeding of the Lord’s sheep; but Christ in speaking only to one suggests the unity of all;

and so He speaks to Peter,
because Peter is first among the apostles.

Therefore do not be disheartened, Peter, reply once, reply twice, reply a third time. The triple confession of your love is to regain what was lost three times by your fear.  You must lose three times what you bound three times; untie by love that which your fear bound.  Once, and again, and a third time did the Lord entrust his sheep to Peter.

Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one.

Peter went first, and Paul followed.  And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostle’s blood.

Sts. Peter and Paul

Let us embrace what they believed,
their life, their labors, their sufferings,
their preaching and their confession of faith.
